About Virginie Joly
Stories, tea, chocolate, and a slightly unhealthy curiosity about people.
I’m Virginie.
I’m a romantic fantasy author, a mother, a mosaic enthusiast, an unapologetic lover of tea and chocolate, and the kind of person who can lose an entire evening to a fascinating question about psychology or history.
I’ve always been drawn to stories. Not just the grand adventures and impossible worlds, but the people inside them. Why do we love the people we love? What makes someone brave? What makes us break? How much of who we are is shaped by the things that happen to us—and how much can we choose for ourselves?
Apparently, my brain decided these were excellent things to think about while building a world of angels and dragons.
Why Fantasy?
Fantasy is not just an escape for me. I love what happens when you take reality, and bend it a little. Suddenly you have room to ask questions that are much harder to ask in reality.
I build impossible worlds, throw my characters into extraordinary circumstances, but it’s the exploration of very real human emotions that makes it interesting.
And romance belongs there too.
I don’t write romance because I want a happy ending. I love the messy middle: attraction and hesitation, trust and vulnerability, the things people don’t say, the ways we hurt each other, and the terrifying decision to let someone see who we really are.
Romance isn’t about two people who are perfect for each other. It’s about two people who change each other.
Inspiration
Inspiration rarely arrives in a neat, labelled box marked WRITING IDEAS. It turns up in the most unusual places, from history books to psychology podcasts, ancient mythology or modern art, during conversations or music that doesn’t need words to move someone. It often leads down a three-hour research rabbit hole sparked by one completely random question.
When I’m not writing, I love making things with my hands, travelling and spending time with my family. I’m naturally curious about people: what shapes us, what drives us, and what lies beneath the surface.
I bring all of that into my stories—and, more recently, into my work with other artists. Add a cup of tea, some chocolate, and an unhealthy number of imaginary characters, and you’ll find me pretty much where I’m happiest.
